SPF, or Sun Protection Factor is a scientific measurement placed on sunscreen used to determine how much longer than normal you're able to stay out in the sun. For example, if you're able to stay out in the sun for twenty minutes without burning wearing no sunscreen, by applying an SPF 8 sunscreen means you should be able to stay out in the sun 8 times longer, or 160 minutes (almost three hours) without risking a sunburn.

 

Most all health care providers insist that you should wear no less than an SPF 15 when going out into the sun for extended periods of time. Of course, for all you redheads and other very fair-skinned and burn-prone people, SPF 30 is recommended.

 

It's also important to note, however, that any product with an SPF of more than 30 offers no more protection than SPF 30. In other words, scientific studies have confirmed that an SPF 45 is no more effective than an SPF 30.
